Abstract
The goal of this study was to measure the level of the burden of disease using the years of alcohol-related mortality, and the years of potential life lost(WLL) in Korea during the 1991-1999.
This study used existing South Korean national darn on investigated using registered death data from 1991 to 1999 obtained from the Korean National Statistics Office(NSO) with 1997 Census.
The main results were as follows; The estimated 25,680 Korean died during 1999 from causes related to alcohol. Such deaths accounted far 18,648 of all deaths for men and 7,042 for women. Motor vehicle accidents were major contributors to the total estimated number of alcohol-related deaths and years of potential life lost before age 65. For men alcohol related mortality rater were significantly higher. Major causes of the deaths were motor vehicle accidents(YPLL 45,572 years, YPLL mean 27.0 years), suicide(YPLL 29,038 years, YPLL mean 23.7 years), chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis(YPLL 43,575 years, YPLL mean 13.9 years), alcoholic prycharir(YPLL 18,985 years, YPLL mean 16.1), and the cancer of liuer(YPLL 9,176 years, YPLL mean 11.1). For women, the largest contributors m alcohol related mortality were motor vehicle accidents(YPLL 13,812 years, YPLL mean 26.5), suicide(YPLL 13,052 years, YPLL mean 26.5 years), chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis(YPLL 51.62 years, YPLL mean 15.5 years), and the cancer of stomach(YPLL 4,051 years, YPLL mean 11.0 years).
During 1999, approximately 276,828(male: 220.315. female: 56,513) YPLL co age 65 and 969,303(male: 734,531, female: 234,772) coral deaths were attributable to alcohol related causes.
The major contributors to these alcohol related years lost were the diagnostic categories of unintentional injuries Particularly, in male. motor vehicle accidents and accidental drowning-YPLL are considerably higher than that for other causer. Male-female YPLL differentials were greatest for mental disorder. Male-female mean-YPLL to age 65, accidental drowning(male: 34.1, female: 36.7) is significantly higher than that for other causes.
